The Girls Scouts is an organization that is steeped in tradition. There are things that we do simply because we are part of the movement, and if we encounter a sister scout from another part of the country or even the world, we can instantly connect with her.
This badge is really easy to earn and is perfect for
one of your first meetings of the year. New girls can learn about the
traditions of scouting and experienced scouts can help teach them and will also
benefit from this review.
Step 1 Sing Everywhere
Singing is a Girl Scout tradition. We sing during
meetings, around the campfire and at special events. Of course, there is the
magical Brownie Song that, if your girls do not know it, this would be the
perfect time to teach them!
Here is a group of Brownies singing it!
Another song you can sing is "Make New Friends".
There is a wonderful Brownie Songbook on Amazon for
less than a dollar, and you can use it for your two years as a leader.
You can also purchase individual Brownie songs on
Amazon.

Step 2 Celebrate Juliette Gordon Low's Birthday
You can also make your own Swap with these cupcake charms, safety pins and pony beads.
The founder of the Girl Scouts of America was born on
October 31, 1860. You can have an entire meeting celebrating who she is and
what she accomplished. You can tie in Step 3 Share Sisterhood by creating a
Swap to give to a sister troop. Since this is a Girl Scout tradition, you are
also completing Step 5, Enjoying Girl Scout Traditions.
Here are some resources for you to use in planning a celebration.

Activity 3 Share Sisterhood
Do something as a troop (like in Step 2, making a SWAP for another troop). Or you can make a troop banner or poster for meetings or do a quick Girl Scout skit.
Step 4 Leave a Place Better Than How You Found It
This is an easy step to complete. Leave the place where you meet even neater than how you found it. Maybe wipe off the tables, not just take your belongings off of it. Sweep the floor or leave a note signed by all the girls thanking the person for letting them use the room for their meetings.
Finally, close your meeting with the Friendship Circle, Friendship Squeeze and sing "Make New Friends".
Here is Junior Troop showing how it is done.

Make Sit Upons (easy and inexpensive way to make them)
Make S'mores
Make SWAPS

Say the Girl Scout slogan (you can read about it in this blog post)

As a 1st year leader of a BRAND NEW troop, THANK YOU!!!! Your blog has help me and my co-leader with ideas...You have saved us! We were so stressed out until we discovered your site! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! You are an AWESOME leader!!!

I appreciate your comment, Jamie! Leaders like you are the reason I created my websites and blogs...I wanted to help others. I started out with an educator's skill set, while many volunteers do not have that experience with children or creating lesson plans. So glad that I can help you out!
DeleteWhere is step 4?
ReplyDeleteThanks for finding that! It was added!
Deletewhat Daisy petal would be a good choice to do with this badge in a multi-level troop?
ReplyDeleteHow about the rose petal, Make the World a Better Place? That is covered in steps 2 and 4.
DeleteHi Hannah!
ReplyDeleteI found you on Pinterest, but how can I find your blog? This is the first year for me and my co-leader with a brand new troop as well. We can use all the help we can find. Thanks so much.

Hi Hannah!
ReplyDeleteI found you on Pinterest. How can I find your blog? This is the first year for me and my co-leader, with a brand new troop as well. We can use all the help we can get. Thanks so much!
Hi Barbara...you found this website for Brownies! In the upper right corner of this site are links to my other Girl Scout websites. On http://www.girlscoutleader.net/, just use the search bar to find posts about any topic you need. My blog is almost eight years old and my girls are Senior Girl Scouts, so I am sure there is information there you need as well. Please let me know if I can help you in any other way!
DeleteSuggestions on how to do step 3 when we can only meet virtually?
ReplyDeleteYou can make a troop poster. You can give each girl a part to color in and they can send it to you in the mail or when you are finally able to gather in person, put it together.
DeleteYou can also do an easy friendship bracelet and the girls can mail it to another girl in the troop (you can assign who receives it).
If you haven't done a SWAP for Step 2, make one. Get kits together and have parents pick them up at your home.
I hope these ideas helped!
